Profile Changes

Some TMD patients may suffer from significant skeletal deformities that relate directly to their degree of joint deformity. The face may show decreased ramus height, steep mandibular angle plane, chin retrognathia (a short chin), anterior face elongation (large nose or long lower face), or facial asymmetry (crooked jaw). These deformities become apparent when internal derangement occurs, whether this occurence is in a child or an adult. It's very important to understand how the loss of dimension (degeneration) or failure to develop (growth deficiency) can change the profile.
